Spring Decluttering Tips from the ReStore
Get Your Home Organized and Tidy!

Spring has sprung, and now is the time to get your home decluttered and organized! The Habitat for Humanity ReStore has some tips to make
the process simple and easy.

Make a plan. Write down all the areas in your home you want to declutter. Areas you may want to consider include: the garage, basement, attic, shed, and so on. Tackle each space one by one. Sort items into four categories: keep, donate, trash, and recycle.

Take before and after photos. Choose one part of your home you want to organize and take a picture. Once you’ve completed your sorting and organizing, take an after picture. Seeing your progress is very satisfying and will encourage you to keep going in other areas of your home.

Start small. If you feel overwhelmed, start with five or ten minutes of decluttering at a time. Starting slow will make the process seem less daunting. You can build up to 30 minutes or more as you go.

Make a donation plan. Did you know the ReStore accepts donations of new and gently used building materials, appliances, and furniture? Donations can be dropped off Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00-5:00 at the ReStore located at 659 Warren Avenue in Portland, or at-home pickups can be scheduled! All of the profits from the ReStore are used to support Habitat for Humanity home building projects in the Greater Portland area.

Know what you have to donate. The ReStore accepts furniture, cabinets and countertops, windows, doors, appliances, lighting, kitchen, bath, and plumbing fixtures, flooring, hardware, tools, lumber, plywood, insulation, and roofing materials. Not sure what you can donate? Contact the ReStore staff for help! Email photos of any items you are considering donating to restore@habitatme.org. You can also call 207-221-0047 to speak to a staff person.

Schedule a pickup. The ReStore offers pickup in the towns of Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, Falmouth, Freeport, Gorham, Portland, Pownal, Scarborough, South Portland, Standish, Yarmouth, and Westbrook. Pickup qualifications include: the items must be in a garage or driveway, must be large and require a truck to move, or if you have a large quantity of items.

Organize the items you decided to keep. Once you’ve donated or trashed the items you don’t need, organize your belongings so that everything has a neat spot. Use baskets or storage containers to keep smaller items organized and tidy. Make sure that the items you use most often are the easiest to access.

Everything must have a place. Every item in your home should have a proper place that is easy to be put away. This helps reduce clutter in the future.
