Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland Seeks “Coastal” Volunteers!

2008 Coastal Living Idea House, Scarborough

July 16th—October 30th

This summer, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland will partner with Coastal Living Magazine and Safe Passage  to bring the magazine’s “Idea” house to Maine.  For a small entry fee, the public will be welcome to tour this beautiful, new coastal cottage in Scarborough filled with products, appliances, and built with innovative materials that will give “tourists” ideas for their own homes.

All ticket sales at the door will benefit Habitat for Humanity and Safe Passage.

Habitat is seeking volunteers during the weeks of July 16th—October 30th.

Volunteers will be collecting admission fees at the door, taking inventory of

printed materials, and answering questions that tourists might have.

If you are interested in volunteering, please email Kate Callahan or

call her at(207) 772-2151.

The cottage is located at 5 Claudia Way in Scarborough and will be open to the public:

Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays: 10am to 5pm

                     Sundays:  12pm to 5pm

YOUth Can Build sponsored by Kids Crooked House
May 24th, 31st, June 1st, 2008

Calling all LEGO-lovers!  This May, youth from all over the Greater Portland area are invited to participate in a YOUth can Build-a-thon using LEGO® and DUPLO® materials at the Maine Mall in South Portland. This project is designed to educate youth on the substandard housing issues in the world as well as demonstrate youth involvement in the mission of Habitat for Humanity. Throughout the spring, classes and youth groups will participate in educational workshops and then be asked to build small houses out of LEGO® blocks to display in the Mall in May. To wrap-up the whole event in May, we will be conducting a “blitz-building” event in Center Court of the Mall where kids will spend the afternoon building a “life-size” house out of DUPLO® blocks. This will be a very exciting first-time event for the Greater Portland affiliate! To learn more about the project, become involved, or make a donation, please contact Kate Callahan at youth@habitatme.org or by phone at (207) 772-2151.

Hospitality for Habitat
The Maine Innkeepers Association is sponsoring the 5th Annual Hospitality for Habitat promotion. The program, started in 2004, is designed to raise money for Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Maine by selling rooms at a discount. Between May 1 and 23, 2008, participating member properties will offer rooms at half the regular rate, in exchange for a $35 check payable to Habitat for Humanity. In 2007 we experienced a 13.4% increase in the amount of money raised by participating members of the Maine Innkeepers Association – We want to thank them for their dedication to Habitat in Maine!
