![]() Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland is going green! We have taken our core mission of providing simple and affordable housing a step further by incorporating environmentally friendly building practices into the construction of our homes. This project is trying for LEED-H certification and includes energy and water efficiencies, responsible site design, recycled materials and durable construction. Only a few other residential homes in the entire state of Maine have received LEED certification. This makes Habitat of Greater Portland a leader in building environmentally friendly homes. But most importantly, Habitat of Greater Portland is trying to add affordability to the green building effort. The affordability component makes the LEED project completely unique to the state of Maine. What is LEED? The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED gives a while-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in 5 key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. For more information on LEED certification, visit the USGBC website at usgbc.org. The design phase of the Build It Green project is nearly complete. The BIG marketing and fund raising committee is working hard to raise the funding necessary to break ground and begin building. How has Habitat of Greater Portland already practiced Green Building? ReStore: For the past year, Habitat for Humanity has been helping members of our community to embark on their own green building projects by providing an opportunity for the public to purchase reclaimed building materials from our ReStore. All materials being at the store have been donated and are sold at 50%-80% of the retail price. Items donated to our Restore may also be used inthe construction of Habitat Homes. How you can be Involved?
