Applications for homeownership in South Portland are now available. These homes are:

brand new and energy-efficient
2 to 3 bedrooms, 1-1.5 baths

Applications are due Monday, September 23 at 4PM!

Do you qualify?

The three basic qualifications to own a home with Habitat are: ability to pay a mortgage, willingness to partner, and a need for housing. Click the button below for full qualification details.

See if you qualify

ability to pay a monthly mortgage that is no more than 30% of your income

You must earn at least $40,000 per year and no more than 65% of HUD Area Median Income (AMI) based on your family size. See the chart below or click here for income limits.
You must be able to save $2,000 for closing costs and fees
Your credit score should be 640 or above. Alternative sources of credit can be considered. Talk to your bank about ways you can improve it.
Your debt to income ratio should be no higher than 43%. Click here to calculate yours.

willingness to partner with Habitat by volunteering to build your home and other homes in the neighborhood

Willing to perform 275 hours of volunteer “sweat equity,” by helping to build your home and neighborhood
Ability to complete volunteer work in the community you will be owning a home in

need affordable housing

This could be considered:

Living in overcrowded housing
Living in substandard housing
Relying on family members or friends for housing
Paying more than 30% of gross income on rent
Do not currently own a home
Unable to qualify for a conventional mortgage or afford a down payment

The application and selection process

Obtain an application: Applications for South Portland are available September 3 and due September 23 at 4PM.
Primary Review: Habitat staff will review your application to ensure it is complete and that you meet our income requirements.
Applications Reviewed by Bank: Applications are reviewed by the bank for financial readiness. During this time, the bank will reach out to you to request additional documents like pay stubs and tax returns.
Depending on the number of applications received, this part of the process can take a few weeks.
The bank will recommend applicants who can afford a monthly mortgage payment.
Interviews: Applicants approved by the bank will be reviewed by our Family Services Committee. Those selected to move forward will meet with staff and committee members. This may be followed by a home visit with your family to see your living conditions.
Selection: Two applicants will then be chosen after deliberation from Habitat staff and volunteers. You will be notified if you were not selected. Those who were not selected are welcome to apply for the next round of homeownership.

How to get an application

Once applications are available on September 3, you can get them in any of the following ways:

Pick up an application at the Habitat administrative office or ReStore, both located at 659 Warren Ave., Portland

  - Friday and Saturday, 10AM-5PM
